Cultural Tours

We at Mranda Safaris believe all our clients should leave our country with the best possible experience and a positive image of the country.† To make sure our clients get this we like to connect them with our local people from different tribes and allow them to observe some of the local traditions of Tanzania.

Tanzania is blessed with more than 120 tribes in an area of around 937,062 square kilometers.†† We at†Miranda Safaris would like to share with you some of our best selected tribes and villages to give you the ultimate exposure to our people.

We believe if one comes to Tanzania you should meet Tanzanians and experience their hospitality along with observing its vast wildlife. We can organize trips to villages before, after or mid-safari depending upon your preference.† If you desire we can make the arrangements so that you donít miss out on this important opportunity.

We suggest you read the descriptions below and choose which ones you find most interesting.† Then we would be happy to help design your tour.† All of the mentioned villages can be easily reached and a tour can take anywhere from one to three days or longer if so desired.

Some of our profits will go to Village development program including Schools, Hospitals and other projects which aim at supporting the area where the village is located.

Below is a list of some of the available Cultural Tours that we offer:

Engaruka Cultural Tourism Program

Guided by Maasai warriors, walk through the mysterious ruined city of Engaruka and the surrounding scrubland.† Located at the foot of the rift valley escarpment, Engaruka remains one of Tanzania's most important historic sites.† Over 500 years ago, a community of farmers developed a unique irrigation and cultivation system channeling water from the rift escarpment into stone canals and terraces.††
Although abandoned in the 1700s Engaruka illustrates a once highly specialized and integrated agricultural community which has been
investigated by archeologistsí world-wide.†

Tour activities include:
õ Day walks for bird-watching at the foot and slopes of the rift valley†
õ Historic visits to sites from the German colonial period†
õ A climb of Oldoinyo Lengai, a semi-active volcanic mountain
õ Take a look into the Maasai culture who continue a life of simplicity and peace in this rapidly changing world

Longido Cultural Tourism Program

Experience one of Africa's most fascinating cultures, the Maasai with a visit to Longido.† A cultural tour of Longido will give you the opportunity to experience traditional Maasai culture and interact with Maasai warriors.† Spend a day walking around the extensive plains of Longido Mountain and get some insight into traditional African culture.†

Tours activities can include:

õWalking safaris with Maasai warriors over the slopes of Longido Mountain
õBird-watching walks over the plains
õA climb up the impressive Longido Mountain, through dense natural forest
õA view into the culture and daily life of the Maasai
õSipping tea with Maasai people in a real Maasai Boma
õExplanation of various plants in the surrounding area by a local guide

Tourism profits will go towards the construction of a cattle dip.† This project will ensure that the Maasai can effectively continue their livelihood through a healthy herd of cattle and goat free of tick-borne disease.

Machame Cultural Tourism Program.

Welcome and explore the life of the Chagga people living on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The Machame area is scattered by waterfalls, coffee and banana farms, historical sites and viewpoints. You have a choice of comprehensive escorted cultural tours lead by our enthusiastic and experienced guides.†

Tour Activities can include:

õA warm welcome in a local Chagga household.†
õHikes through dense natural forests, farms and rivers.†
õThree different views of the snow capped Mount Kilimanjaro, where local ancient, Chagga legends recount tales of an Iron hut that made them to be strong.†
õA visit to several development projects in the area (coffee production, traditional irrigation, a forestation, cross breeding, bee-keeping, schools, health care, food processing, etc)
The profit will be used to subsidise various women and youth development activities within the area.†

Marangu Mamba:
At the foot of Kilimanjaro lie the beautiful towns of Marangu and Mamba.† Here, local people have planned various walking tours through valleys and numerous waterfalls depicting mountain village life.† Enjoy the panoramic scenes of and natural beauty of Kilimanjaro.

Tours activities can include:†
õGuided tours leading to panoramic viewpoints ideal for photography of waterfalls and†Mount Kilimanjaro.
õA chance to pass historical sights from clan wars and† ancient legends including large hiding caves used during the Chagga - Maasai wars
õA visit to local blacksmiths who continue using ancestral methods to prepare Maasai†spears and tools.
õOpportunity to experience Chagga culture with a visit to a traditional Chagga house

Mkuru Cultural Tourism Program:
Welcome to the camel camp at Mkuru, where you can take camel safaris to the plains between Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and Lake Natron, and enjoy the friendly behavior of the "ship of the desert".† Mkuru is situated on the North side of Mount Meru, not far away from the irrigated fields of Engare-Nanyookye and the Momela gate of Arusha National Park. From a distance the area can be easily recognized through the remarkable shape of Ol Doinyo Landaree, the little mountain that looks like a pyramid.

Tour Activities can include:


õ A visit to the camel camp at the foot of Mount Meru
õ Athorough explanation of the way camels are kept in the semi arid plains.
õ A camel safaris varying in length from half a day to one week
õ A bird-watching walks through the plains around Mkuru.
õ A climb up Ol Doinyo Landaree, the mountain with the shape of a pyramid.
õ A view into the culture and daily life of the Maasai.

The profit will be used for running a kindergarten for Maasai children.† Your visit helps us to improve the quality of our childrenís education.

Monduli Juu:

Karibu! Welcome to the mountainous areas of Monduli Juu, where you can experience an original Maasai Culture in different adventurous ways.
Tour activities can include:
õA visit to the Sominen, Emairete and Sokoine dams with their different splendid bird† life.
õA climbing trip through the evergreen rain forest.
õA rest at astonishing panoramas, overlooking the Rift Valley, Oldoinyo Lengai, and Lake Natron.
õA warm welcome in Naramatu: a small ìfactoryî where Maasai women make Maasai jewels.
õTraditional ìnyama chomaî with our Maasai warriors in ìOrpulî (Maasai meat camp).†
õ Learn the story of the secret differences between Maasai and Waarusha†

The profit will be used in the set up and running a Kindergartens in Monduli Juu.

Mulala Cultural Tourism Program.

Just outside Arusha lies the picturesque village of Mulala on the slopes of Mount Meru.† Tours begin at Mama Anna's farm which is also home to the Usangi Womenís Group.

Tour activities can include:

õA guided tour criss-crossing coffee and banana farms to the top of Lemeka Hill.
õA glimpse of the daily life of Meru farmers, information on surrounding vegetation and††crops.
õA walk to the Marisha River bands, home of colorful birds and playful monkeys.
õA school visit to a local primary school where children will greet visitors with songs†and dance
